The Worcester Warriors have confirmed that lock Michael Fatialofa had undergone a successful surgery to relieve pressure on his spine after being injured in a Premiership match last weekend.
The New Zealand player suffered a neck injury during the Warriors’ 62-5 loss to defending champions Saracens in London on Saturday.
Play was stopped as Fatialofa received medical attention and, after being stretchered off the field, he was immediately taken to hospital.
An earlier update from the Warriors stated that the injury had left Faialofa with reduced sensation in his arms and legs.
In a statement released today, Worcester confirmed that Fatialofa’s surgery was a success, adding that he is still in a serious condition.
‘Warriors lock Michael Fatialofa is resting and recovering in St Mary’s hospital in Paddington, having undergone surgery last night to relieve pressure on his spine cord caused by swelling,’ the statement read.
‘The operation was a success and Michael is stable but remains in a serious condition and is receiving ongoing care at the intensive care unit of the hospital.
‘The process of recovery and observation of improvement will now begin.’
Fatialofa is currently in his second season with the Warriors following his arrival from the Hurricanes. The 26-year-old was part of the Hurricanes team that won the 2016 Super Rugby title.
