Ulster let red-hot Kok go

In-form South African wing Werner Kok will depart Ulster at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old underlined his value with a hat-trick in Ulster’s thrilling 38-38 Vodacom URC draw against the Stormers last weekend.

He has scored 10 tries in 15 URC matches this season – and 12 across all competitions – but that wasn’t enough to earn a new contract.

Kok’s departure is more a reflection of Ulster’s squad planning than his performances.

Irish provinces are often reluctant to retain overseas players if it limits opportunities for homegrown talent, and Ulster have several exciting outside backs pushing through the ranks.

DOBBO: Cardiff’s desperation meant more

The former Sharks speedster joined Ulster in 2024 and quickly became a fan favourite thanks to his relentless work-rate, physicality and nose for the tryline.

In a statement, the province praised Kok for making an immediate impact.

“The former Blitzboks sevens star has showcased his try-scoring ability, with 12 tries scored in all competitions so far, and playing a key role in Ulster’s relentless attack this season.”

Kok is one of 11 senior players who will depart the club, with Wallabies prop Angus Bell’s short-term stint with the province also coming to an end.
