Springbok Frans Steyn is delighted at being back playing for the Cheetahs and living in Bloemfontein.
Almost 15 years after completing his schooling at the prestigious Grey College in Bloemfontein, Steyn is back in the city having joined the Cheetahs from French club Montpellier earlier this season.
Before his current career move, Steyn had successful stints at the Sharks, Racing 92, Toshiba Brave Lupus and Montpellier. During that same period, the now 33-year-old has also gone on to win two World Cup winner’s medals with the Springboks in 2007 and 2019, respectively.
In an interview with IOL‘s Jacques van der Westhuyzen, Steyn commented: ‘It’s so nice being back in a town where everyone can understand you and speaks your language,’ a chatty Steyn said this week.
‘I’m an Afrikaans guy and the people here in Bloem speak Afrikaans, it’s lekker. It’s also nice going into shops and recognising stuff on the shelves. South African food is also still the best,’ he said.
‘I’ve obviously been back to Bloemfontein over the years with the Springboks and when I was at the Sharks, but this is a little more permanent. I’ve got kids now who need to go to school.
‘I don’t know what the future holds, but for now I’m settled here and enjoying it. I can for a change understand what people around me are saying.’
