Stefan Terblanche’s Perfect XV

Andre Venter Former Bok flank André Venter
Published on July 6, 2018

The former Springbok wing selects a team of the best he played with and against for SA Rugby magazine.

15. JOE ROFF
An absolute mastermind in any backline position and a great guy.

14. BEN TUNE
He was an incredibly strong runner and very competitive.

13. BRIAN O’DRISCOLL
A great all-round rugby player, who lasted for a long time at the top level.

12. TIM HORAN
His performance against the Boks in the 1999 World Cup semi-final, while suffering from a stomach bug, was incredible.

11. SHANE WILLIAMS
A little genius with incredible footwork who was, pound for pound, the best rugby player in the world at the time.

10. ANDREW MEHRTENS
Another rugby genius with a great ability to read and control the game.

9. GEORGE GREGAN
He was a clever player who provided a wonderful link between the forwards and backs. He also had a huge influence on the referee.

8. LAWRENCE DALLAGLIO
Dallaglio had a great work rate and a never-say-die attitude on the field.

7. ANDRÉ VENTER
He was old school in his approach to the game but, boy, was he tough and effective. When you were on the wrong side of the ruck, you wore his studs.

6. RICHIE McCAW (c)
McCaw’s name was always in red when we planned for the opposition, yet he still managed to steal and disrupt our ball.

5. KRYNAUW OTTO
He formed an excellent second-row combination with Mark Andrews.

4. MARK ANDREWS
Mark would hit the ruck at 100km/h with great effect, moving bodies around.

3. ADRIAN GARVEY
He had a wonderful work rate around the park and gave you good, solid ball at scrum time.

2. RORY BEST
Not the biggest guy around, but the way he used his size was inspirational.

1. DUNCAN JONES
He was also not the biggest, but the way he threw his body around during games was incredible to watch.
