Wallabies scrumhalf Tate McDermott has given a damning assessment of his side’s performance and form ahead of their Rugby Championship clash with the Springboks in Gold Coast on Sunday.
Australia slumped to 3-0 Bledisloe series defeat after losing 38-21 to the All Blacks in Perth this past weekend. The result came despite New Zealand playing with 14 men for 20 minutes after conceding a red card in the first half.
Up next for Dave Rennie’s men are the world champion Springboks and McDermott, who was one of only a few Wallaby standout performers against the New Zealanders, has frankly admitted the state Australia are currently in.
“It’s so disappointing, frustrating I guess from our point of view,” McDermott said in his post-match interview on Saturday.
“It’s groundhog day. Every time we say we’re going to do something we don’t do it. We’re pretty soft at the moment and that’s the honest assessment of it.
“We’ll pick the little positives we can out of that but we’ve got to get back on the horse, because it’s only going to get tougher against South Africa from here.
“Incredibly disappointing, we’ve got to just keep looking at ourselves in the mirror. We’ve got to keep pointing at ourselves and being honest with our reviews.
“It’s no easy fix. We’ve got to be better, it’s as simple as that.”
The Wallabies are bottom of the Rugby Championship standings because of a worse points differential than Argentina.
