Sharks eye Irish flyhalf

The Sharks are reportedly targeting another overseas Test flyhalf as they look to bolster their options at No 10 ahead of next season.

The Durban-based outfit have already been linked with Wallaby James O’Connor and Italy’s Tommaso Allan.

According to Rapport, Irish playmaker Ross Byrne has now emerged as another potential target.

The 31-year-old has earned 22 Test caps for Ireland since 2018 and is currently contracted to English Premiership club Gloucester.

KEO: Siyaya ignites Sharks future

Before moving to England last year, Byrne spent a decade with Irish giants Leinster, where he established himself as one of the province’s most reliable flyhalves.

Byrne signed a three-year deal with Gloucester when he joined the club, meaning the Sharks would likely need to negotiate a release should talks progress further.

The Sharks currently have Jordan Hendrickse, Siya Masuku and Junior Bok Vusi Moyo on their books, while 18-year-old fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya wore the No 10 jersey against Benetton last Saturday.

Another flyhalf, Jean Smith, will leave the Sharks at the end of the season to join Benetton.
