The South African Human Rights Commission says it is probing claims that comments by the institution’s legal head, Buang Jones, could cause harm to an investigation into the Eben Etzebeth racism allegations.
According to a report on Eye Witness News, the SAHRC confirmed asking Jones to refrain from commenting on the matter while the investigation is under way after receiving several complaints – including one from the Afrikanerbond – claiming that comments by Jones at a community meeting in Langebaan could give rise to prejudice.
‘Mr Jones was recalling what the community had been saying. For example, Mr Jones said that the community said Mr Etzebeth or the respondent must return to South Africa,’ SAHRC commissioner Chris Nissen told EWN.
‘The position of the commission is very clear: there’s no call for Mr Etzebeth to come back, we want him to play and we want the Springboks to bring back that cup for us.’
The commission last week filed legal papers with the Equality Court after Etzebeth was alleged to have been involved in a racist attack in Langebaan, where he referred to a group of people as h*tn*tte. Civil action is also being pursued.
