A round up of what some of South Africa’s leading Sunday papers are saying, including an update on Saru’s transformation plan for 2030.
While the backpage of Rapport newspaper is centred on the Cheetahs’ Currie Cup title win, there is also a report on Saru’s new transformation plan. According to the story written by Brenden Nel, the plan will cover more aspects than just South Africa’s player base and unions could lose their right to host Test matches if they fail to meet targets. The new plan will focus on the demographics of the 14 union’s teams, including women’s teams, as well as referees, coaches and clubs. The 14 unions have accepted the plan.
Staying with Rapport, in the latest transfer news, the Sharks look to have added yet another player to their roster by signing Lions wing Madosh Tambwe. According to writer Hendrik Cronje, Tambwe will be joined by Cheetahs’ duo Ox Nche and Henco Venter as well as Western Province No 8 Sikhumbuzo Notshe and Blitzbok Werner Kok at the Natal union. Tambwe, 22, was born in Kinshasa and attended Parktown Boys’ High. He made headlines by scoring four tries in a Vodacom Super Rugby match against the Stormers and has been in excellent form in this year’s Currie Cup.
Another South African schoolboy is set to move to France. According to the story in Rapport, Grey College wing Marcel Muller will be joining Montpellier later this year. He will be joined at the French giants by Paul Roos duo Kade Wolhuter and Robbie Rodgers. The report states that the Blitzboks were the only local team to show interest in the youngster.
