Published on March 16, 2020

The annual North-South schools rugby tournament has been called off due to the precautions around the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

The four-day tournament, entering its seventh edition, was set to be hosted by Hoerskool Waterkloof between 20-24 March.

Top rugby schools such as Grey College, Menlopark, EG Jansen, Affies, Garsfontein and Paul Roos were all set to be involved in this year’s tournament, which has become an extremely popular event on the schoolboys rugby calendar.

However, following Sunday’s address by president Cyril Ramaphosa on the Covid-19 virus – which included stipulations that all schools will close from 18 March to the end of the Easter weekend – organisers have decided to cancel the tournament.

‘It is with great sadness that the organisers of the Noord Suid rugby tournament have decided to cancel the event. The organisers of the tournament confirmed that it will not take place as advertised from 20 March until 24 March 2020.

‘The safety and health of all rugby teams and children countrywide is of utmost importance. Our decision had been made in line with the national address of the President late on Sunday, 15 March that declared the issue as national disaster.

‘The organisers of the tournament have not given a new date for the tournament. We wish to thank our sponsors for the support during this time.’
