Michaelhouse score Michaelhouse late show sinks Saints
Published on April 22, 2019

Among the wins of the day, Michaelhouse beat St Stithians 22-20, joined by Kingswood, Rondebosch and SACS on day three of the Saints Festival.

Michaelhouse had been struggling to get going at the festival, losing their two opening games against Grey and St Andrew’s, but captain James Moodie inspired them to a thrilling two-point win against the hosts on Monday to finish the event on a positive note.

St Stithians outscored Michaehouse four tries to three, but a poor kicking display proved costly for the home team. Luhan van Aswegen, Ryan Howell, Munashe Chaitezwi and Yenam Zouzoua touched down for St Stithians.

Converted tries from Moodie and Siyanda Mkhize, coupled with a penalty kick from Xhanti Gqweta, saw Michaelhouse trail 20-17 going into the last minute of game. A turnover in midfield allowed the KwaZulu-Natal side to launch one last attack in search of an upset win, and they succeeded.

Wing Thami Zakwe split the Saints defence with a searing run and scored a brilliant try to turn the result in Michaelhouse’s favour.

Meanwhile, Kingswood lashed Trinityhouse 31-0, Rondebosch continued their good form with a 38-5 triumph over Northcliff to end the tournament unbeaten, and SACS hammered Prince Edward 34-14.

The game between Parktown Boys’ and St Andrew’s, and the clash between King David and the St Stithians XV were cancelled due to lightning.
