Kings players, coaches and staff are reportedly still awaiting their salaries for April – 10 days after payments were meant to go through.
According to a report by Sport24, Kings management missed the usual scheduled payment day on 25 April but had promised in a letter that salaries would be paid by the 30th of last month. However, that deadline has passed with players still awaiting their salaries.
An anonymous source told Sport24 that players would be paid on Tuesday, 5 May, but they had yet to receive any money.
‘We were told yesterday [Monday, 4 May] that today [Tuesday, 5 May] was going to be the payday and they were going to make the transfer this morning,’ the source said.
City Press reported that the delay comes as the Kings’ majority shareholders – the Greatest Rugby Company in the Whole Wide World – were in conflict with the Eastern Province Rugby Union, who runs the amateur arm of Eastern Province rugby.
The EPRU was reportedly accused of intercepting a R6-million bailout from the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality after claiming it was owed money by the GRC. This conflict was apparently at the root of why funds were delayed in being transferred to the franchise.
