Kings coach wields axe

Bjorn Basson in action for the Kings Bjorn Basson
Published on January 17, 2019

Deon Davids has made seven changes to the Kings’ starting XV ahead of their match against the Cheetahs in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

The Kings’ 38-0 drubbing against Edinburgh a fortnight ago has prompted Davids to overhaul his lineup, with four changes up front and three in the backline.

Davids has inserted an all-new front row, consisting of props Nicolaas Oosthuizen and Schalk Ferreira, and hooker Michael Willemse. Henry Brown slots straight in at blindside flank after a three-month injury layoff.

The quartet takes over from Pieter Scholtz, Alulutho Tshakweni, Alandre van Rooyen and Martinus Burger.

In the back division, the experienced Bjorn Basson will start on the left wing in place of Michael Makase, with Yaw Penxe shifting to the right wing.

Berton Klaasen is preferred at inside centre ahead of Harlon Klaasen, while Ntabeni Dukisa gets the nod at flyhalf in place of Martin du Toit.

The Kings’ bench has been boosted by the return of influential loose forward Andisa Ntsila following a stint on the sidelines due to injury.

The match kicks off at 7pm on Friday.

Kings – 15 Masixole Banda, 14 Yaw Penxe, 13 Tertius Kruger, 12 Berton Klaasen, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Ntabeni Dukisa 9 Stefan Ungerer, 8 Ruaan Lerm, 7 Henry Brown, 6 Cyril-John Velleman, 5 John-Charles Astle (c), 4 Stephan Greeff, 3 Nicolaas Oosthuizen, 2 Michael Willemse, 1 Schalk Ferreira.
Subs: 16 Alandre van Rooyen, 17 Lumpumlo Mguca, 18 Rossouw de Klerk, 19 Andries van Schalkwyk, 20 Andisa Ntsila, 21 Sarel Pretorius, 22 Martin du Toit, 23 Harlon Klaasen.
