Jobb’s redemption story fuels Blitzboks charge

Sebastiaan Jobb says he is determined to finish the season on a high after overcoming setbacks that once left him questioning whether he had a future with the Blitzboks.

The Springbok Sevens speedster is pushing for selection for the final two legs of the World Championship in Valladolid and Bordeaux, with the Blitzboks still chasing more silverware after another impressive campaign.

“Of course I want to be in the squad as we are not yet done for the season,” Jobb said. “We have done well, but we can still do better and that is why we are working hard in training.

“It is a great environment and to be part of this is what I hoped for.”

Jobb’s journey to this point has been anything but straightforward.

After making his debut in Hong Kong and Singapore in 2023, opportunities were limited. Injuries disrupted his progress in 2024, and when chances finally came his way, they ended in heartbreak.

“I was selected to go to Vancouver and got a red card, and when I got my next opportunity, in Singapore in 2025, I was red-carded again and that almost broke me, to be honest,” he said.

At that stage, Jobb had featured in just four tournaments across three seasons.

But he refused to give up.

IMPI: Blitzboks came back from dark place

A strong performance at the Africa Cup in Mauritius put him back in contention, and he has not looked back since.

Singapore this season proved to be a turning point, while his display in the final against Fiji in Perth helped the Blitzboks lift another title.

“It was special to finally be part of the trophy lift,” Jobb said.

His momentum has continued through Vancouver, New York and Hong Kong, underlining his growing importance to the squad.

“The players are really working hard for each other,” he said. “Our training sessions are intense and full of detail, and I am happy to be part of that.”

Jobb believes life on the wing in sevens requires far more than simply finishing chances.

“Playing wing in sevens does not mean you can just stand on the outside waiting for someone to pass you the ball,” he said. “You have to have an all-round game on attack and defence.”
