Consideration into acquiring British citizenship is reportedly factoring into scrumhalf Francois Hougaard’s decision-making after receiving an offer to join the Vodacom Bulls.
The 32-year-old has been linked with a move back to Loftus from the Worcester Warriors, who he joined in 2016.
While negotiations between Hougaard and the Bulls have gone well, they had yet to sign a contract and according to Sunday publication Rapport, the player is contemplating extending his stay in Europe in order to obtain British citizenship.
Having moved to England in 2016, Hougaard will qualify to apply for British citizenship at the end of the 2021 season.
The Bulls would need Hougaard to make a decision to provide clarity on whether they need to pursue someone else to come into their scrumhalf ranks to fill the void that’ll be left by the outgoing Ivan van Zyl.
Since Jake White’s arrival at Loftus, the Bulls have engaged in an ongoing recruitment drive, with the latest signings being Springboks Marcell Coetzee and Johan Goosen, both from European clubs.
