Former Wallabies captain calls it quits

James Horwill leads Australia Former Wallabies captain calls it quits
Published on April 15, 2019

Harlequins and ex-Wallabies captain James Horwill will retire at the end of the current European season.

Horwill earned 62 Test caps and was named Wallabies captain for the 2011 World Cup.

The lock made 120 Vodacom Super Rugby appearances for the Reds and led them to the title in 2011. He moved to Harlequins in October 2015.

‘I have given this great game everything I have, and I feel I can no longer give what is needed to play at this elite level,’ Horwill said.

‘Rugby has been a big part of my life for many years; never in my wildest dreams would I have envisaged the incredible journey it has taken me on. Winning the Super Rugby title and being asked to captain my country are just some of the moments I will look back on and cherish for a lifetime.

‘I’ve had the privilege and honour to not only play, but captain my state, country and club, Harlequins, on a number of occasions over my 14-year career. I want to thank all the coaches and staff I’ve worked with over my career; you have all made an impact and shaped me into the player and person I am today.’

A true champion! Congrats on a stellar career @JHorwill. #GoldBlooded ?? https://t.co/m7EIINXHg4
