‘Folau posts unacceptable’

Rugby Australia has confirmed it is investigating a series of controversial posts made by Wallabies and Waratahs fullback Israel Folau.

Folau has become caught up in another scandal after once again sharing his views on the LGBTQ+ community.

The 30-year-old first shared his controversial sentiments on Instagram, posting an image which stated that ‘hell awaits homosexuals’ and those guilty of other ‘sins’.

He then posted a screenshot on Twitter of the news that Tasman had become the first Australian state to make gender optional on birth certificates, accompanied by the comment: ‘The devil has blinded so many people in this world, repent and turn away from your evil ways. Turn to Jesus Christ who will set you free.’

In a statement released on Wednesday, Rugby Australia confirmed it would look into the posts.

‘Rugby Australia is aware of a post made by Israel Folau on his Instagram account this afternoon,’ the statement read. ‘The content within the post is unacceptable. It does not represent the values of the sport and is disrespectful to members of the rugby community.

‘The Rugby Australia integrity unit has been engaged on the matter tonight.’

The incident comes a year after Folau met with Rugby Australia CEO Raelene Castle to discuss his use of social media, following a similar post weeks before.

Rugby Australia chief executive Raelene Castle applauded Folau for having strong beliefs, but said his use of social media needed to be respectful.
