Israel Folau has opted against appealing Rugby Australia’s decision to officially terminate his contract after allowing the 72-hour deadline to pass.
Folau was found to have committed a high-level breach of Rugby Australia’s code of conduct after posting homophobic comments on social media last month, with a three-person panel recommending that his four-year, $4-million contract be torn up last Friday.
Under due process Folau had 72 hours to appeal the decision, but after the window closed he confirmed in a statement that he will not be taking that route.
‘The last few weeks, and in particular the last 72 hours, have given me considerable opportunity to reflect and think about my future,’ Folau said.
‘My decision not to commence Rugby Australia’s appeal process is in no way an acceptance of the judicial panel’s findings.
‘I simply do not have confidence in Rugby Australia’s ability to treat me fairly or lawfully throughout this process.’
Folau does still have the option of taking the matter to the courts, which he has yet to do.
