Here are the top-five standout players from the fifth round of the 2021 Varsity Cup campaign in Pretoria.
Athi Gazi (UCT)
UCT’s hat-trick hero made light work of the CUT Ixias defence during the top-of-the-log clash. The fullback was all over the field, making 208 running metres while gaining 120. He also kicked well out of hand and completed both of his tackles.
Louritz van der Schyff (Tuks)
The outside centre captained Tuks against Udubs and led from the front in his 44 minutes on the field. His 28th-minute try certainly helped the Stripe Generation to secure what was ultimately a narrow win and move into second place on the log.
William Moffat (Shimlas)
The Shimlas hooker has had an impressive run through this year’s tournament and it was no different as he recorded 61 minutes against UJ. Moffat scored a point-of-origin try in the second half as Shimlas fought back brilliantly, and made 10 tackles in the match.
Constant Beckerling (Wits)
The flank had been a light in the dark for a Wits side that had struggled until now. His physicality, never-say-die attitude and work rate was instrumental in Wits overcoming Madibaz using their forward pack, and he even added his name to the scoresheet.
David Brits (Maties)
The passionate captain of the Maroon Machine organised his team effectively and got the best out of them to keep the NWU Eagles at arm’s length. He scored a crucial point-of-origin try early in the second half to give his side a 12-6 lead, made seven tackles, and while he was yellow-carded for a foot trip in the last minute, the game was secure by then.
