Famous Stars Who Turned to Commentary

Famous Stars Who Turned to Commentary
Published on December 7, 2022

Rugby matches can be tricky, especially for new fans… Commentators with a vast knowledge of the game, more so as one-time players, come in handy in every match for insights and narrations.

You might have heard their voices before, but perhaps you need to know who they are…

Former Rugby Stars that are Currently Commentators

Brian O’Driscoll

Brian O’Driscoll is a former Irish and Leinster star, born in 1979. The former Six Nations Winner is joining BT Sport as a rugby expert. He is a great addition to the program, considering he is one of the greatest Centers (13) to play the sport.

With Brian behind the mic or during his analysis, you can expect detailed backline plays-insights through his rugby IQ, as we have known it throughout his career. His rugby knowledge also stretches to the forwards; thus, we expect his commentating days to be one of the best.

Brian O’Driscoll’s commentary can be used as rugby insights, which can help viewers when placing bets on Bettors.co.za, and what to expect in upcoming matches. You can also use the site to get legal updates and sports news.

Murray Mexted

Murray Mexted is a household name in Rugby Union, both as a player and commentator. He featured for the All Blacks in 34 test matches between 1979-1985 and later became a known voice, mainly in Super Rugby Matches.

As a former 7-time captain of the New Zealand team, his sports coverage is unique and doesn’t shy away from call-out players. He is also known to give his playing days stories strategically during games, thus connecting with fans in a great way.

Jonathan Davies

Another famous addition to the list is a former Welsh player playmaker between the 1980s and 1990s. Jonathan Davies began his career early for the U12s, proving his love for the sport, and later went to feature for Wales and several clubs professionally in Wales, England, and Australia.

He never left after retiring as he joined the media side as a commentator and an analyst for BBC. Davies became a household name in the industry, where he started his rugby show. Jonathan, for in-depth analysis and discussions.

Brian Moore

Brian Moore was not as famous on the pitch as the other parties on the list, but his contribution as a commentator perhaps surpasses each of our mentions. His rugby days were spent as a hooker for:

  • England
  • British and Irish Lions
  • Nottingham
  • Harlequins
  • Richmond

After retiring from Richmond, he joined commentary and is also a rugby presenter for BBC and Talksport. He is renowned for his brutal honesty, especially when it involves the Six Nations or an England match. You can regularly catch him commentating with Eddie Butler, another popular rugby presenter.

Conclusion

Their Rugby days might be long gone, but they still had or have something to offer as commentators. You can get some of the mentioned personalities in the ongoing test matches and the upcoming Rugby World Cup.
