Wallabies coach Michael Cheika’s fate remains in the balance after a Rugby Australia board meeting in Sydney on Monday.
The Wallabies finished their 2018 campaign with four victories from 13 games, for a 31% winning record. Not since 1958, when Australia won two from 11, has the national team done so badly (in years where 10 or more games have been played).
As a result, there has been speculation that Cheika could be sacked just eight months before the World Cup. The coach was given the chance to state his case on Monday and will hope it’s enough to keep his job.
‘We’ve had a presentation from Michael, data gathered from him, from his coaching staff, from the players and the high-performance unit, and we need to go through a fairly thorough review process,’ said RA chairman Cameron Clyne.
‘We’ve got all the information we need and we’ll be going through that process. I know people are very keen to know what’s going on, but I thought it was important to at least let you know where we are in that process.
‘We’ll have more to say and have that process wrapped up ahead of Christmas.’
