The Barbarians have announced the inclusion of Schalk Brits in their squad for the match against Argentina at Twickenham on 1 December.
Brits hung up his boots at the end of the European season after a nine-year tenure at Saracens. But the 37-year-old hooker has put his retirement plans on hold since being called up to the Springbok squad in June.
He didn’t feature in the recently concluded Rugby Championship, but he has now been selected to play for the elite invitational club that will be coached by Bok boss Rassie Erasmus.
‘Being part of the Barbarians was one of the best rugby experiences I’ve ever had in terms of pure entertainment and meeting guys you normally bash week-in and week-out. It’s outstanding,’ Brits said.
‘I got to play with the likes of Jerry Collins, Ma’a Nonu and Jason Robinson – legends from the past, legends of the present and then there are those who go on to be legends in the future. It’s a unique bond. Now I get to do it again, making new friends and making people proud.’
Springbok trio Handré Pollard, Eben Etzebeth and Tendai Mtawarira were previously named in the BaaBaas squad, bringing the overall total of South African players to four.
