Johan Ackermann has hailed John Mitchell’s appointment as England defence coach after his move from the Bulls was confirmed this week.
Ackermann, who worked under Mitchell at the Lions, wrote a reference for his visa application.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, the Gloucester coach applauded the move, suggesting Mitchell could make a difference to Eddie Jones’ struggling England side.
‘I was one of the people he asked to write a reference for him for his visa,’ Ackermann said. ‘It’s great. I think he’s going to add a lot to England because he’s a technical world-class coach.

‘He’s in there for the defence, but they can tap into other areas as well. He’s a good breakdown coach, he’s a good attacking coach and like I said he’s very good with individual technical stuff.
‘I think Eddie was very clever and hopefully, he’ll make a difference for England.’
Ackermann said that although Mitchell is a disciplinarian, he should be able to get the best out of the English players.
‘He’s a great guy, passionate about the game, he’s constantly thinking about it. The players will know he’s hard on his discipline and I think Eddie is as well.
‘But then again, with his technical skills, I think he’ll get the best out of every player.’
