Springbok captain Siya Kolisi has been training with Western Province over the past two days and could make a comeback against the Lions on Saturday.
Kolisi sustained a knee injury towards the latter stages of the Stormers’ Vodacom Super Rugby season, ruling him out of any on-field action in the Springboks’ Rugby Championship openers against the Wallabies and All Blacks.
While the level of Kolisi’s involvement in this weekend’s Currie Cup match against the Lions at Newlands is still in question, he did manage to train without a knee brace.
He was joined by fellow Bok Dillyn Leyds, who did not get game time against the Wallabies despite being named on the bench, and wing Sergeal Petersen.
Province assistant coach Dawie Snyman was still unsure of Kolisi’s status but was more positive on Leyds and Petersen.
‘Dillyn is definitely back and will be available,’ Snyman told the media after training on Monday. ‘I am not sure about Sergeal’s status. I’m not sure if he will be ready this week, but he was training with us last week already.
‘Siya looks good. I was with the forwards just now and he was training with them. He brings an energy to the group, be it as a member of the playing group or with his contributions in team meetings, so it is good to have him back.
‘I am not sure of what his status is regarding this week. We will find that out later. But the initial plan was that he would train with us for two weeks and then play. Unfortunately, we have a bye next weekend so I don’t know where that leaves us.’
