Sharks coach Robert du Preez has explained his decision to select son Rob du Preez at flyhalf ahead of Curwin Bosch against the Jaguares last week.
The Sharks travelled to Buenos Aires for a must-win clash against the high-flying Jaguares, but despite Bosch’s standout performances at flyhalf in the lead-up to the encounter, he was selected at fullback, with Du Preez taking up position at No 10.
It was a highly criticised selection, especially in the aftermath of a humiliating 34-7 defeat to the Argentinian side.
Speaking to East Coast Radio about his controversial team selection, Du Preez Snr said he felt he needed both Du Preez and Bosch on the field.
‘In the game against the Jaguares, we needed an experienced 10 and 15 because the thought process was that the game was going to be like a Test match,’ Du Preez said.
‘With both players having played at the highest level and both having a great kicking game and decision-making, I felt we needed both on the field and that was the reason behind the selection.’
Commenting on the form of Du Preez Jnr, which has been inconsistent in recent weeks, the coach remained relatively tight-lipped.
‘This weekend is a big one and he knows what is at stake and what is expected, and so does the whole team. It won’t come down to one guy, it’s going to be a team effort from all 23 players,’ he explained.
Du Preez also confirmed that Bosch’s ankle injury is not as bad as initially feared.
‘Curwin will only be out for this week. There’s nothing structurally wrong, it’s only a sprain. He’ll be available next week.’
