Samoa player Gordon Langkilde was suspended for the final day of the Sevens World Cup after a post-match fracas that left Welshman Tom Williams with a tournament-ending injury.
Langkilde remained on the bench for the remainder of Samoa’s consolidation games after their 24-19 loss to Wales on Saturday, while Wales were given permission to replace Williams with 13th man Will Talbot-Davies.
World Rugby confirmed that an unspecified Samoan player had been suspended after investigations into an incident in the tunnel after the match.
‘The alleged behaviour is not aligned with the sport’s values and the excellent spirit in which this competition has been played by the 40 participating teams.
‘World Rugby has instigated an investigation and the Samoa player will remain provisionally suspended until the final conclusion of that process.’
While the nature of Williams’ injury was not disclosed, teammate Luke Treharne said the players were left shocked by the incident.
‘When it all comes out, you’ll see all the details of it, but it’s pretty shocking stuff. Nothing really sparked it or anything, just unprovoked. Nasty stuff to see.’
